The third hop will show Cox cable information. It may time out on the second hop or it may show the IP address of the cable modem. just so long as you have a flashing cursor.Ģ) Type in the following at the prompt and then hit enter: tracert The very first hop should be 192.168.1.1 (your Linksys). Click on the administration menu and then on the Factory Defaults sub menu then select Yes for Restore Factory Defaults and then click on Save Settings. I did have one of these routers out of the box misbehaving and a factory default setting reset fixed it. Trying resetting the Linksys back to factory defaults and then follow the steps I outlined in my earlier post.
Before you go through all of these steps I am outlining below. I also am assuming that since you are getting Cox network information onto the Linksys that the network between the Linksys and the cable modem is good.īased on everything you have told me it should be working.

Now I have to assume that since you can login to the Linksys that the Linksys is handing you an IP and the network between your PC and the Linksys is good. so your router is picking up information from the cable modem. Again if you live out in the boon docks then this won't matter. Now you need to decide if you want to secure your wireless network to keep people from skimming the internet off of you. Make it something generic like "private" or "wireless". I don't recommend using a name that can be tied back to you. This is so you can see yours easily from your neighbors. well you get the picture.ġ0) Change the SSID to something besides linksys. If you are near another one on the same channel it can cause problems and since most people do not change their routers basic settings. The reason for the change is they all come out of the box on channel 6. Don't worry about this one if you don't have any neighbors near you. Apply it and then log back in.ĩ) Go to the wireless section and change the channel for 6 (default) to something else. Leave the username blank and the password is adminĨ) Go to the administration setting and change the password to something secure. Now you need to secure your Linksys WRT54G.ħ) Open Internet Explorer. Once the PC is up you should be able to surg the net. Let it boot too (takes about 45 seconds).Ħ) Turn on your PC. Let it boot all the way up (give it a minute or two).ĥ) Plug the Linksys up to power next. Connect it to the "WAN" or "Internet" port on the Linksys.ģ) Unplug the power from the cable modem and the Linksys and shutdown your PC.Ĥ) Plug the power back into the cable modem first.
